Tailoring strain in SrTiO3 compound by low energy He+ irradiation
The ability to generate a change of the lattice parameter in a near-surface
layer of a controllable thickness by ion implantation of strontium titanate is
reported here using low energy He+ ions. The induced strain follows a
distribution within a typical near-surface layer of 200 nm as obtained from
structural analysis. Due to clamping effect from the underlying layer, only
perpendicular expansion is observed. Maximum distortions up to 5-7% are
obtained with no evidence of amorphisation at fluences of 1E16 He+ ions/cm2 and
ion energies in the range 10-30 keV.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, Accepted for publication in Europhysics Letter

Characterization of a ZnSe scintillating bolometer prototype for neutrinoless double beta decay search
As proposed in the LUCIFER project, ZnSe crystals are attractive materials to realize scintillating bolometers aiming at the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of the promising isotope 82Se. However, the optimization of the ZnSe-based detectors is rather complex and requires a wide-range investigation of the crystal features: optical properties, crystalline quality, scintillation yields and bolometric behaviour. Samples tested up to now show problems in the reproducibility of crucial aspects of the detector performance. In this work, we present the results obtained with a scintillating bolometer operated aboveground at about 25 mK. The detector energy absorber was a single 1 cm3 ZnSe crystal. The good energy resolution of the heat channel (about 14 keV at 1460 keV) and the excellent alpha/beta discrimination capability are very encouraging for a successful realization of the LUCIFER program. The bolometric measurements were completed by optical tests on the crystal (optical transmission and luminescence measurements down to 10 K) and investigation of the crystalline structure. The work here described provides a set of parameters and procedures useful for a complete pre-characterization of ZnSe crystals in view of the realization of highly performing scintillating bolometers
Excitations in confined helium
We design models for helium in matrices like aerogel, Vycor or Geltech from a
manifestly microscopic point of view. For that purpose, we calculate the
dynamic structure function of 4He on Si substrates and between two Si walls as
a function of energy, momentum transfer, and the scattering angle. The
angle--averaged results are in good agreement with the neutron scattering data;
the remaining differences can be attributed to the simplified model used here
for the complex pore structure of the materials. A focus of the present work is
the detailed identification of coexisting layer modes and bulk--like
excitations, and, in the case of thick films, ripplon excitations. Involving
essentially two--dimensional motion of atoms, the layer modes are sensitive to
the scattering angle.Comment: Phys. Rev. B (2003, in press
Bose-Einstein condensation and superfluidity of dilute Bose gas in a random potential
We develop the dilute Bose gas model with random potential in order to
understand the Bose system in random media such as 4He in porous glass. Using
the random potential taking account of the pore size dependence, we can compare
quantitatively the calculated specific heat with the experimental results,
without free parameters. The agreement is excellent at low temperatures, which
justifies our model. The relation between Bose condensation and superfluidity
is discussed. Our model can predict some unobserved phenomena in this system.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Magnetic reversal in ion-irradiated FePt thin films
International audiencePrevious work on ion irradiation control of FePt thin films magnetic anisotropy is extended to ultrathin films (2-10nm). The effects of 30keV He ion irradiation on the magnetic properties are explored as a function of ion fluence and film thickness. Depending on their growth conditions, the thinnest films exhibit different magnetic properties. Although this affects their final magnetic behaviour, we show that after irradiation at 300 @BULLET C the easy magnetization axis may rotate entirely from inplane to out-of-plane at very low fluences, e.g. 2×10 13 He + /cm 2 on 5 nm thick film. This demonstrates the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic anisotropy to ion-induced local L1 0 ordering. Under these conditions, ultrathin films may exhibit perfectly square hysteresis loops with 100% remnant magnetization and low coercivity
Order enhancement and coarsening of self-organized silicon nanodot patterns induced by ion-beam sputtering
3 pages, 3 figures.-- PACS nrs.: 81.05.Cy, 81.07.-b, 68.47.Fg, 81.16.Rf, 79.20.Rf, 68.35.Bs.The temporal evolution of the characteristic wavelength (λ) and ordering range (ξ) of self-organized nanodot patterns induced during Ar+ ion beam sputtering on Si(001) and Si(111) surfaces is studied by atomic force microscopy and grazing incidence x-ray diffraction. The patterns exhibit initial coarsening of λ (up to 54–60 nm) and increase in ξ (up to 400–500 nm) after which both features stabilize. The pattern formation is only weakly controlled by the crystallographic surface orientation, Si(111) surfaces showing a faster evolution into a proper stationary state. This trend is attributed to a higher sputtering rate at this orientation, as confirmed by theoretical simulations. This work has been supported by grants BFM2003-

Bosons in Disordered Optical Potentials
In this work we systematically investigate the condensate properties,
superfluid properties and quantum phase transitions in interacting Bose gases
trapped in disordered optical potentials. We numerically solve the Bose-Hubbard
Hamiltonian exactly for different: (a) types of disorder, (b) disorder
strengths, and (c) interatomic interactions. The three types of disorder
studied are: quasiperiodic disorder, uniform random disorder and random
speckle-type disorder. We find that the Bose glass, as identified by Fisher et
al [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 40}, 546 (1989)], contains a normal condensate component
and we show how the three different factors listed above affect it.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures (low res) v2 Title,Abstract,Introduction: changes;

Dynamics of liquid 4He in Vycor
We have measured the dynamic structure factor of liquid 4He in Vycor using
neutron inelastic scattering. Well-defined phonon-roton (p-r) excitations are
observed in the superfluid phase for all wave vectors 0.3 < Q < 2.15. The p-r
energies and lifetimes at low temperature (T = 0.5 K) and their temperature
dependence are the same as in bulk liquid 4He. However, the weight of the
single p-r component does not scale with the superfluid fraction (SF) as it
does in the bulk. In particular, we observe a p-r excitation between T_c =
1.952 K, where SF = 0, and T_(lambda)=2.172 K of the bulk. This suggests, if
the p-r excitation intensity scales with the Bose condensate, that there is a
separation of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature and the superfluid
transition temperature T_c of 4He in Vycor. We also observe a two-dimensional
layer mode near the roton wave vector. Its dispersion is consistent with
specific heat and SF measurements and with layer modes observed on graphite
surfaces.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

Epitaxial MgB2 thin films on ZrB2 buffer layers: structural characterization by synchrotron radiation
Structural and superconducting properties of magnesium diboride thin films
grown by pulsed laser deposition on zirconium diboride buffer layers were
studied. We demonstrate that the ZrB2 layer is compatible with the MgB2 two
step deposition process. Synchrotron radiation measurements, in particular
anomalous diffraction measurements, allowed to separate MgB2 peaks from ZrB2
ones and revealed that both layers have a single in plane orientation with a
sharp interface between them. Moreover, the buffer layer avoids oxygen
contamination from the sapphire substrate. The critical temperature of this
film is near 37.6 K and the upper critical field measured at Grenoble High
Magnetic Field Laboratory up to 20.3 T is comparable with the highest ones
reported in literature.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, submitted to Supercond. Sci. and Techno
